Late Prophet TB Joshua died after a church service on Saturday when no single church member suspected any health issues with him, a church member in attendance said.
The entire service was conducted in his usual manner with international and local followers in attendance.
It was therefore shocking and has remained so when news of his death filtered out through the night with a confirmation in the early hours of Sunday in an official statement from the church pastorate.
A few facts to know about the life of the popular televangelist:
- The late Prophet Temitope Balogun Joshua was born on the 12th of June 1963 and would have turned 57 on Nigeria’s Democracy Day which coincides with his birth day.
- He was born in the little Niger Delta fishing village of Arigidi in Akoko, Ondo State.
- His birth was unusual as he spent 15 months in his mother’s womb.
- Little Temitope Balogun attended St Stephen’s Anglican Primary School in Ondo State and graduated in 1977.
- His love for the scriptures became obvious while in Secondary School and this earned him the title of ‘Small Pastor.’ He began holding bible studies for kids in his community.
- The Prophet formally launched his ministry in 1987 when “he received a call from God.”
- His Church, SCOAN records well over 50,000 visitors annually. Reports from the Nigerian Immigration service says that out of every 10 visitors into Nigeria, 6 are visiting the SCOAN.
- The influential minister founded the Emmanuel TV Station, the largest Christian station in the country. He also has millions of followers on social media who scamper to keep up to date with current happenings and miracles. On Facebook, the Prophet has more than 2.5 million fans while his YouTube videos has more than 300 million views.
- An average of 15,000 members worship at his church on every Sunday service. The Church has also constructed hostels and guest houses that make attendance for foreign visitors in particular, easy.
- Sadly an unforgettable event befell the church on the 12th of September 2014 when one of the guest houses collapsed killing 115 Africans. Officials blamed the collapse to poor construction work. On its part, the church authorities said that a small aircraft was spotted circling the building before it went down. According to TB Joshua, it was an attempt to kill him as he aired the camera footage of the aircraft to support his narrative.
- TB Joshua was married to Evelyn Joshua who is believed to be the 2nd most senior member of the ministry. Together, they have 3 children. The firstborn daughter graduated from the London School of Economics, the second daughter, Promise is studying Politics and International Relations at the London School of Economics.
- In 2016, TB Joshua prophesied that Hilary Clinton would win the US Presidential Elections with what he described as a narrow victory. He also stated that the new President would be faced with numerous challenges. However, when the prediction turned out differently, the Facebook post was deleted.
- Joshua is estimated to have a net worth of between $10 million to $15 million. A report by Forbes lists him as the 3rd richest pastor in Nigeria.
