17th May covid19 saw an unprecedented rise in confirmed new cases of the dreaded disease. Lagos still leads in new infections, followed by Kano and the FCT.

Breakdown of new infections by states:

Highlights of total figures as at 17th May:
  1. Total tested across the country: 33,970
  2. Confirmed cases: 5,959
  3. Active cases: 4,183
  4. Discharged: 1,594
  5. Deaths: 182

President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to address the country today, Monday the 18th. This is according to news monitored on Channels TV and according to the Co-ordinator of the Presidential Task (PTF) on covid19, Aliyu Sani.

Sani hinted that the President will give directives on the next phase of the easing of lockdown measures taken to stem the spread of the coronavirus disease.

Yesterday, 17th May 2020, @MBuhari received the PTF team at the #AsoVilla.

The team briefed him on developments with the #Covid19 pandemic in the country.

It is expected that the meeting will guide Monday’s address on the next phase of the ease of lockdown.

 

 

Lagos State 17th May Report:

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu is considering the next phase of easing the lockdown imposed upon Lagosians.

He had, on his May 3rd address advised residents of the state that easing the lockdown would come in 3 phases of 2 weeks each. Phase 1 has now ended while phase 2 is being considered.

According to him, the economic conditions of the state will not permit a permanent lockdown but further reopening will come with conditions.

All players are expected to “register to re-open.” Included in the conditions is space management.  Businesses under consideration are “all players in the restaurant business, event centres, entertainment, malls and cinemas.”

He expects the businesses to recondition their operations to the realities of the pandemic with regard to what their work spaces will look like.

Speaking further, Governor Sanwo-Olu said that social distancing and hygiene will come into play to determine if churches and Mosques will be allowed to reopen.

Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) will visit the venues to advise on their levels of preparedness.
