2 dead bodies have been removed while 9 persons got seriously injured when a 3-storey building collapsed in Lagos at about 2:00am this morning, Saturday, 11th July.

The incident occurred at Freeman Street in the Lagos Island area while occupants were still asleep.

Dr Damilola Oke Osanyintolu, Director General, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in statement this morning. He added that rescuers are still on sight trying to rescue more occupants trapped in the rubble.

Also on sight were officials of the Ministry of Physical Planning, Lagos State Building Control Agency (LABSCA), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Nigeria Police and Fire Service.

Speaking to AFP, Ibrahim Farinloye of NEMA said that “the building was under renovation by a property developer when it caved in.”

“We have removed 2 bodies and rescued eight people who were seriously injured from the debris,” he said.

He added that there would have been more casualties if the building was fully occupied.

Farinloye explained further that “most of the original occupants had vacated the building to allow for its renovation. Only a few occupants were inside the building when it collapsed.”
