2 Ukrainian football stars, Vitalii Sapylo and Dymtro Martynenko have been killed in the raging Russia-Ukraine war.
The deaths were announced in a tweet by the International Federation of Professional Footballers (FIFPRO).
The federation sent its condolences to families, friends and teammates of the Ukrainian footballers.
The tweet by FIFPRO@FIFPRO read: “Our thoughts are with the families, friends, and teammates of young Ukrainian footballers Vitalii Sapylo (21) and Dmytro Martynenko (25), football’s first reported losses in this war.
“May they both rest in peace.“
Russia’s invasion of neighbouring Ukraine started last Thursday and has seen citizens of Ukraine take up arms to protect their country.
Joining in the battle is Heavyweight boxer, Vitali Klitschko who happens to be the mayor of Kyiv. His brother, Wladimir Klitschko also volunteered to fight to protect Ukraine.
On his part, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, has offered to waive visa requirements for foreigners willing to assist him in the fight to defend the sovereignty of his country.
Zelensky authorised a decree that would allow foreigners to assist his country in the fight against Russian troops.
Many Nigerian youths have, since the announcement signified interest in joining to fight for Ukraine.
