Richard Gbadebo is a 20-year old University of Ibadan (UI) student that was crushed by a huge industrial machine in Ibadan during the week.
The 300-level student of German Language had taken up a job as a machine operator at Henkel, a German factory and was on a 13-hour night shift when the accident occurred.
According to his friends, he took on the job to support himself and his parents due to the the economic hardship brought on by the #COVID19 pandemic.
Aderemi Moses, one of his co-students paints a vivid but gory account of the incident. According to him,
“At about 6:30am, which is 30 minutes till he closed for the day, they found his blood gushing at the other side of the industrial machine.
“They checked and saw his legs beside the huge industrial machine. Richard had allegedly struggled to get himself out after the machine probably hooked him.
“The company more than 24 hours after the incident have released no statement or even sent representatives to see the family. This is sad.
The UI students say that Richard’s legs were picked up in a cement bag while his remains have still not been given to his family.
An aggrieved group of 23 students who stormed the factory premises were threatened, according to them, with a gun by a management staff.
Armed policemen were also drafted in to secure the premises
