3 siblings in Ilorin, Kwara State are reported to have died after eating amala.

Àmàlà is a local indigenous Nigerian food, native to the Yoruba ethnic group in the western states of the country.

2 others are said to be hospitalised for the same reason. All 5 children are of the same parents.

Amala is made from yam or plantain flour and consumed with varieties of local soups.

Family sources say that the children initially complained of stomach pain soon after eating their rations and started vomiting the balls of amala.

The incident occurred in a community in the Ilorin East Local Government Area of the State. All 5 children were rushed to the children’s hospital in Centre Igboro. Unfortunately, 3 of them were declared dead at the hospital.

The other 2 are said to have survived and are responding to treatment.

During interrogation, the children’s father confirmed he produced the yam flour himself but cannot say what went wrong.

The incident comes few days after 4 members of another family died of food poisoning in a seperate incident in Kwara State.
