The Federal Ministry of Works has announced that it will close the 11.8km 3rd Mainland Bridge for repairs.

The Federal Controller of Works, Olukayode Popoola made the announcement today, 6th June. According to him, the closure will commence on the outward mainland section of the bridge. The ministry is working with the Lagos State Government and agencies of government to find alternative routes.

The closure which will commence on the 24th of July, will last 6 weeks. The ministry adds that consultation are ongoing to carry out major works on the bridge.

3rd Mainland bridge has seen various repair works, the very last being August 2018, when it was shut down for 3 days.for investigation and maintenance.

Some worn-out expansion joints of the 3rd Mainland Bridge have called for the planned repairs as commuters and experts have raised concerns about the state.

It promises to be an uncomfortable transport system as part of Eko Bridge is currently closed to traffic for repairs and has been since March 2020. The closure of causes unbearable traffic around the Surulere – Costain – Iganmu axis.

However, the traffic lockjam may be reduced if the COVID19 lockdown is extended.
