9 Feared Dead in Auto Crash in Benin City

At least 9 people are feared dead in an early morning auto crash on the ever busy Sakponba Road in Benin City, the  Edo State capital.

An eyewitness reports that the accident occurred at the Ogbelaka junction when a tipper loaded with sand collided with 2 commercial buses conveying passengers.

The source said that the casualties would have been more if the forex black market operators did not flee to safety.

Other passersby also scampered to safety when other vehicles suddenly veered off the crash spot.

According to the eyewitness, the tipper involved in the accident was trying to overtake another tipper but lost control and collided with the two minibuses, killing many of the commuters on the spot.

The accident caused heavy traffic gridlock as all adjoining stress right up to the popular Ring Road and beyond were blocked leaving commuters trekking long distances.

While eyewitnesses claimed to have counted 9 bodies, the Edo State Police Command Public Relations Officers Bello Kontongs told newsmen that only 4 people died.

According to him, “It involved a truck coming from Upper Sakponba that lost control and ran into a white bus killing 3 people on the spot while one died on the way to the hospital. The injured victims have been rushed to the hospital for treatment.”
