WhatsApp Scam Uncovered

A scam has been reported on WhatsApp warning users to ignore any message asking users to share their verification codes over the app’s chat.

WABetaInfo  a popular website that posts updates about WhatsApp reported the scam on Thursday.

In its post, WABeta Info said that:

“A new WhatsApp scam has been spotted where the threat actor pretends to be a WhatsApp technical team and asks users to share their WhatsApp verification code over chat.

“The threat actor sends an official-looking message to users on WhatsApp and has a WhatsApp logo for profile picture to dupe WhatsApp users.

WABeta Info warns that this fake as WhatsApp does not send users messages on its platform. It says however, that if they do, the message comes with a visible green verified indicator. The website also recommends that @WhatsApp has the account that sent out such a request.

Dario Navaro, a Twitter user shared a screenshot of the message received by a user asking for his verification code. The user sought to know if the message was genuine.

For good measure, WhatsApp has a caveat in its FAQ page warning users that:

“To protect your account, WhatsApp will send you a push notification when someone tries to register a WhatsApp account with your phone number. To keep your account safe, don’t share your verification code with others. You can also enable a 2-step verification to advance the security on your WhatsApp account.”

WABetaInfo further advises that if a someone has had access to your account, you recover it by signing into WhatsApp with your phone number. The next step is to verify your phone number by entering the 6-digit code that will be sent to you via SMS. Once you take that action, the unauthorised person that has hacked your account gets automatically logged out.
