For violating a child custody order, the Upper Area Court situated in Kubwa, the Federal Capital Territory has ordered the arrest of Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar is the son of Nigeria’s former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Father and son bear the same first and last names.

the order for arrest follows his alleged refusal to obey an October 27 judgement directing him to hand over custody of his three children to their mother, Maryam Sherif.

Atiku’s ex-wife had commenced proceedings to secure custody of her children after her divorce their father.

Her prayers were granted by the judge, Bashir Danmaisule in a judgement delivered on the 27th of October.

Weeks later, having not complied, Sherif’s lawyer, Nasir Saidu approached the court to complain that his client’s ex-husband had not complied with the judgement.

Reports say that neither Abubakar nor his lawyer, Abdulahi Hassan was in court at today’s hearing.

The bailiff confirmed that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar was served with the court summons through the Nigerian Customs Service where he works.

The judge therefore ordered the court to issue a warrant of arrest against him.

Justice Danimaisule added that the defendant has consistently refused to appear in court with all three children at every sitting contrary to court order.

The judge therefore ordered that Abubakar be remanded in a correctional centre until he obeys the child custody order.
