News reaching us say that the mace for the Ogun State House of Assembly has been carted away by unknown persons.

The incident took place in the very early hours of Thursday. According to reports, hoodlums broke into the office of the Speaker, Olakunle Oluomo and went away with the mace.

The mace is the symbol of authority of the lawmakers, without which they will not sit to deliberate on any issue.

The Speaker however, said that the stolen mace will not deter members from carrying out their duties.

At the time of this report, security agents had taken over the premises of the assembly located within the vicinity of the Governor’s office also close to the State Secretariat, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

The Public Relations Officer for Ogun State Police Command, Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed the incident and added that coat of arm has been recovered while the stick is still missing.

Oyeyemi disclosed that investigations into the incident have commenced.

The PPRO added that “Yes, there is an unfortunate incident today in the assembly complex.

“The hoodlums bro into the assembly through the ceiling and removed the official mace of the house.

“That is why the Commissioner of Police has to go there for an on-the-spot assessment.”
