A group of students travelling to the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba were yesterday afternoon attacked by armed men suspected to be Fulani herdsmen.
The students numbering about 8 said the herdsmen came out of the bush of the highway and started spraying bullets at their vehicle.
They added that they escaped by the whiskers and are truly grateful to escape alive.
The boys were on their way to commiserate with colleagues at the Adekunle Ajasin University (AAUA), Akungba.
An accident at the gate of AAUA yesterday, involving a Dangote truck killed scores of students and bystanders at the gate of the University.
The students have called on the government to put a stop to the endless deaths on the roads in Akungba town by fixing them.
According to Mr Rafiu Sanni@rofasanten, “That unfortunate Akungba crash was most avoidable had the @NigeriaGov thro the @FMWHNIG put the Itapele-Isua-Kabba road in good shape. That road is better for haulage trucks than the snaky Ọ̀wọ̀-Ìkàré-Okene road. Condolences to the families of the deceased victims.”
Reports also say students of the University and youths of Akungba town on Sunday, barricaded the road to the city when a government delegation visited on a fact finding mission.
Meanwhile, the Students Union of the Adekunle Ajasin University have issued a statement on the incident.
They advise their colleagues that they are in talks with relevant authorities and that everyone must remain calm to avoid hoodlums hijacking the situation.
With great distress, we show our sincere condolences to the deceased and the entire student populace. However, the best of this is to ensure our great icons do not just pass away without ensuring lasting solution to the reoccurrence of such within the student community.
-The Students’ Union has met with all necessary stakeholders and a barricade foundation has been erected today to put a total stop to heavy duty trucks plying our road. -The union has also issued a 24-hours ultimatum to the Ondo state Government to find a permanent solution
-The union is working vigorously to ensure that the lives of everyone is safe as we can never afford to lose a “pin” to any accident whatsoever anymore.
However, we therefore demand the cessation of the students from the ongoing peaceful protest as some unidentified hoodlums have almost hijacked our agitations from us, which would develop into a great disarray.
Students should await proper and further directives on the ongoing agitations as all hands are on decks The proper forces have been mobilized to seriously curb anyone caught in the act of violence in the name of agitations. It’s strongly advisable that students leave the Streets
To cap it all, we make bold to reiterate that the Student’s Union wouldn’t tolerate any attempt to infringe the Welfare of the vast Nigerian students from any quarter. We shall always do everything in our capacity to effect smile on your face and to uphold the S.U constitution.
