President Idriss Deby Itno has been endorsed by the ruling party in his bid to rule Chad for the 6th time after a successful Presidential election in April.
68-year-old Deby, a former Army chief has been in power for 30 years after he ousted Chad’s autocratic leader, Hissène Habré in December 1990
He, on his part, has survived various rebellions and coup attempts against his rule. He gladly welcomed the recent nomination by Chad’s ruling party, the Patriotic Salvation Movement.
According to him, “Allow me, my brothers and sisters to tell you that it is after a mature and deep introspection that I decided to respond favourably to this call of the people.”
Idriss Deby has been re-elected every five yers since 1990 due largely to the constitutional changes approved by a 2005 referendum.
The referendum removed limits on presidential terms.
12 opposition parties had on Tuesday, vowed to field a joint candidate against the incumbent Deby come April the 11th, 2021.
The opposition parties also signed a deal creating an electoral coalition called Alliance Victoire (Victory Alliance).
The coalition’s manifesto highlights a joint approach for government, a code of conduct and “the criteria for appointing a single candidate on a transparent and consensual basis.”
