17 Lawmakers Test Positive for Covid19

A least seventeen (17) Ghanaian lawmakers are reported to have tested positive for the highly contagious covid19 disease.

The report was followed by the parliament’s order to shut down from Tuesday, February 9.

The premises will remain closed for not less than three weeks to enable the premises handlers fumigate and disinfect the complex.

The Speaker of the House, Alban Bagbin revealed that besides the legislators, some members of staff were also infected.

He there ordered that parliament shuts down until the 2nd of March to allow for “disinfection and sanitisation of the premises.”

A skeletal sitting was advised last week but with rising cases, spreading across lawmakers and members of staff, the Speaker said that’ “I have, in consultation with leadership, decided that sitting of of the house be adjourned for three weeks.”

As at this morning, besides the 17 members of parliament, 151 supporting staff tested positive for the dreaded novel disease.

So far, Ghanaian #COVID19 cases have reached 73,003 mark with 482 deaths and 65,000 recoveries.
