Lekki and Ajah parts of Lagos are the dream residential destinations for nearly all upwardly mobile Lagosians.
An average 2-bedroom apartment costs between N1 million and N3 million depending on how far you want to be from the famous Lekki Toll Gate.
The curious thing is that such apartments are rarely vacant as they get snapped up even before they are fully constructed.
Most people who vacation the apartments have as their next destinations, Europe and America. They immediately pass the house to close friend or family who does not mind paying much more rent than his predecessor.
Indeed, many people make it a point of duty to announce and emphasise to friends and family that they live in Lekki, VGC or Ajah because of the prestige that comes with it.
Both areas became popular in the early 90’s when mainland Lagos became chocked up due to urban migration. They have become more popular than Ikeja GRA, hitherto famous Opebi and Allen Avenues and even sadly, Ikoyi.
Unfortunately, all that glitters is not gold. At the slightest rainfall, all the streets and residential areas get flooded while some residents have fun going on boat rides on the floods.
This Sunday’s rain was moderate but it paints a grim picture of what is to come by the time the rainy season fully sets in.
