Nigeria has, as at Saturday, 11th of September being 100 days of the microblogging website,Twitter ban in Nigeria, lost N247.61 billion Naira.

The Federal Government, on the 4th of June, 2021, suspended Twitter after the bird app deleted a tweet by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The latter had made comments about the punishment that he would mete out to a section of the country, a development which many considered provocative.

The telcos were subsequently ordered by the Nigerian Communications Commission to block access to Twitter nationwide.

The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria thereafter announced that, “We, the Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria wish to confirm that our members have received formal instructions from the Nigerian Communications Commission, the industry regulator to suspend access to Twitter.”

“ALTON has conducted a robust assessment of the directive in accordance with internationally accepted principles.”

The NetBlocks Cost of shutdown Tool reports that the blockade costs Nigeria’s economy N103.17m ($250,600) every hour.

So far, 2,400 hours and N247.61 billion have been lost since the Federal Government banned Twitter.

Nigerians have, however, bypassed the ban, accessed the app using Virtual Protocol (VPN) and continued to use the tool seamlessly.

A firm, ExpressVPN had said that it recorded an increase of over 200 percent in web traffic from Nigeria since the Federal Government banned twitter.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Muhammed said recently that it was close to reaching a working agreement aimed at lifting the ban with Twitter

Nigeria joins China, Iran and North Korea in banning the bird app.

Twitter is an American microblogging and social networking service on which users post and interact with messages known as “tweets”
