A Federal High Court sitting Abuja has ordered the team of policemen under embattled Abba Kyari to release unconditionally, a girl arrested and detained during the #EndSARS protest.
The court also ordered the police to pay Ngozi Umeadi the sum of N50 million
Umeadi was arrested on the 16th of February 2020 by operatives of the IGP Intelligence Response Unit led by Abba Kyari.
She was accused of taking care of #EndSARS protesters during the nationwide youth action.
In a ruling on Thursday, the court declared that the arrest and continued detention of Umeadi by operatives of the IRT was illegal and a gross violation of her fundamental human rights.
The presiding judge, Modupe Osho-Adebiyi also awarded in her favour, exemplary and aggravated damages to the tune of N50 million against the police as reparation.
Osho Adebiyi also ordered the police to tender a public apology which must be published in 2 national dailies to Umeadi.
Lawyer to the girl, Ifeanyi Ejiofor told newsmen that he would ensure that the police adheres to the judgement.
According to him, “We shall also be speedily be following up on prompt compliance with these terms of judgment, while other pending applications affecting others still in this category are being addressed in court. Do not lose hope.
“However, be assured that justice can only be delayed but not denied. All persons illegally arrested and still being detained by the lawless Nigerian Security Agencies shall get justice.
“We are not relenting. We shall give further update on the outcome of today’s visit to our indefatigable client – Mazi Nnamdi Kanu once the visit is concluded. The fur=ture is very bright indeed.
“With your understanding and prayers, we shall surmount all the unsurmountable using the extant judicial and civil process, Ejiofor added.
