Sanwo-Olu Suspends 'Walk for Peace' over Omicron Variant

The governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-olu has suspended preparations for the ‘Walk for Peace’ over increasing cases of the Covid-19 Omicron variant.

He had called for the walk on the 30th of November, before the release of the white paper on the judicial panel report that investigated cases of police brutality in the state.

The panel also investigated the 20th of October, 2020 Lekki Toll Gate mass shooting of unarmed youths who were calling for an end to the dreaded Special Anti-Robbery Squad and bad governance in the country.

Speaking on Thursday, the Governor said that, “Between Tuesday, 30 November 2021 that I made my address and now, we have seen a significant rise in cases associated with Omicron variant of this pandemic.”

Many of the youth influencers invited by the governor to join in the Walk, turned down the invitation insisting on justice for their friends who were slain at the toll gate.

Lagos is the epicentre of the battled against the pandemic in Nigeria. Earlier in the week, State authorities released guidelines for concerts and other festive activities as Christmas and New Year celebrations draw near.

The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotosho advised that all social events must be registered for safety clearance ahead of the events day.

He added that concertgoers must show evidence of being fully or partially vaccinated before being admitted to an event venue which must not exceed 60% of the original capacity.

“In unvaccinated people, a negative PCR test within 72 hours will be an exemption,” the Commissioner said.

he said that all guests and service providers with temperatures above 37.5 should be “Politely turned back and referred to paramedics or the emergence response team on ground.”

On 26 November 2021, WHO designated the variant B.1.1.529 a variant of concern, named Omicron, on the advice of WHO’s Technical Advisory Group on Virus Evolution (TAG-VE).
