The Lagos State Police Command has warned residents against staging any form of protest over the late Sylvester Oromoni whose death has caused widespread controversies.

12-year-old Oromoni died on the 30th of November after he was allegedly assaulted by senior students who allegedly tried to force him into their secret cult.

He was also alleged to have been given a poisonous liquid to ingest which caused a lot of damage to his internal organs.

The harmful substance coupled with the physical injuries he sustained from being brutally battered, caused his death.

Following the death, the Lagos State Government shut down the school, detained 5 students and 5 members of staff fingered in the death.

However, the Police Force released the detainees after clearing them of all charges insisting that the young boy died a natural death.

The development caused outrage, sparking another round of protests even from Oromoni’s tribesmen, the Ijaw nation.

Speaking at a news conference on Friday, January 7, The Police Commissioner, Hakeem Odumosu warned that such protests will not be tolerated in the future.

He said, “Much as we commiserate with the bereaved family on the death of their lovely and promising child, it is advised that the protesters and other individuals or groups who are still aggrieved should go to law court to seek redress instead of taking the law into their own hands.⁣

“Thus members of the public who may have any misgivings about the outcome of the police investigation, medical enquiry and legal advice with this case are advised to follow due process in law rather than resorting to self-help.⁣

“The police will not fold their arms and allow any act or omission that could threaten the peace being enjoyed in the state.”⁣

In spite of the DPP’s ruling, a coroner’s inquest into Oromi’s death will commence on the 15th of January.

An inquest is a judicial inquiry in common lawjurisdictions, particularly one held to determine the cause of a person’s death.

The Oromoni family has rejected the findings of the Lagos State government and demand the intervention of the Inspector-General of Police and President Muhammadu Buhari.
