An Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Maiduguri, the Borno State Capital has been gutted by fire.
Reports say that no fewer than 17 people sustained varying degrees of injuries while 1 died.
The fire which started at about 1:00pm on Friday, was confirmed to newsmen in a statement released by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).
The NEMA and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) are said to have visited the camp to assess damages caused by the inferno which reportedly started from a cooking fire in one of the IDP tents.
A statement released by the Principal Information Officer NEMA North-East, Abdulkadir Ibrahim, revealed that about 100 shelters were destroyed, while dozens of households in the camps were displaced as a result of the incident.
The fire, however, has since been brought under control by the personnel of the State Fire Service.
Ibrahim explained that the injured victims had been administered first aid.
The IDP camp fire was reported a few hours after, Malam Buba Danfulani, a top commander of the Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP) was killed by troops of the Nigerian Army.
Danfulani and some ISWAP fighters were neutralised by an airstrike conducted by the Nigerian military along the fringes of Lake Chad in Borno State on Sunday, February 13.
The ISWAP leader was said to be in a meeting with his lieutenants when the airstrike was executed at the East of Madayi in the Kukawa Local Government Area of the state.
The terrorists warlord was in charge of the deployment of spies, collection of taxes and levies, and also acted as an intermediary between the ISWAP leadership and newly recruited terrorists.
