Court Rejects Kyari's Request for Release Due to Major Ailment

The Federal High Court in Abuja has rejected the request of embattled Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari to be released from detention due to a major ailment.

The suspended former commander of the Intelligence Response Team, IRT, had dragged the Federal government to court over his continued detention in the custody of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA)

Ruling on the case on Monday, Justice Inyang Eden Ekwo asked Abba Kyari to put the Federal Government on notice of the existence of the suit he instituted against it.

Justice Ekwo refused to order the immediate release of the suspended DCP, ordering him to put the respondent on notice.

The judge added that all the allegations levelled against the Federal Government are so weighty that the court must give the government opportunity to defend itself.

Abba Kyari had through his lawyer, Cynthia Obianuju Ikena, asked the court to order his release or alternatively set liberal bail conditions for him.

The police officer claimed to be suffering from chronic diabetes threatening his life and therefore needs urgent medical attention.

He had also claimed that members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Easter Security Network (ESN) were behind his recent travails.

Fresh allegations have trailed his indictment in a case involving the self-confessed internet fraudster, Hushpuppi.

Kyari was, last week, caught on camera offering bribe to an NDLEA operative to compromise on some seized drugs.

He has also be been linked to a huge consignment of Tramadol which he seized but never reported to the NDLEA.
