A lecturer at the University of Ibadan (UI) has approached a customary court to dissolve her 20-year-marriage to a colleague who happens to also be a lecturer in the institution.
Reports say that Dr Bilikis Babarinde has been married to Prof Sikiru Babarinde for the past 20 years with 3 children between them.
She however, prayed a Grade A Customary Court, Iyaganku, Ibadan, to dissolve their union immediately.
The reason for Dr Bilikis’s decision is not yet known but a report by Punch Metro states that she is a lecturer at the Department of Library, Archival and Information Studies, Faculty of Education.
She told the court that the 20-year relationship had broken down completely and should be dissolved immediately.
Her husband, Prof. Babarinde, is a lecturer at the Department of Early Childhood and Educational Foundations in the same faculty.
While insisting on divorce, the plaintiff also asked the court for an order granting her custody of their three children and an order.
She also requested that the court mandate the defendant to bear full responsibility for the payment of their school fees, books, feeding and medical expenses until they complete their undergraduate and post graduate education.
Dr Bilikis also in the suit, asked that her estranged husband pay N100,000 monthly for the children’s upkeep.
Counsel to the plaintiff, Olufemi Adegoroye said in an interview that the defendant had earlier agreed to the dissolution of the marriage, but came up with new things which were not contained in a counter-affidavit.
Te president of the customary court, RB Gbadamosi adjourned the case till April 11 for a hearing of the preliminary objection.
