Russian President, Vladimir Putin has announced a partial ceasefire in 2 cities in Ukraine. They include Mariupol and Volnovakha.
The development was made public in a statement on Saturday, March 5 by the Defence Ministry of Russia.
It stated that the partial ceasefire which beings today, is to allow residents of the 2 cities curtly under siege to leave immediately.
“Today, March 5, from 10 am Moscow time, the Russian side declares a regime of silence and opens humanitarian corridors for the exit of civilians from Mariupol and Volnovakha,”the Ministry said.
Russian forces have taken over the two key cities after days of attacks, with the soldiers cutting Mariupol’s electricity, food, water, heating and transportation.
Mariupol’s Mayor, Vadim Boychenko confirmed earlier that his city was under siege by Russian forces after days of deadly attacks.
He called for a ceasefire and a humanitarian corridor for food and medicine.
“For now, we are looking for solutions to humanitarian problems and all possible ways to get Mariupol out of the blockade,” he said.
Since President Vladimir Putin’s army invaded on February 24, Russia has pummelled Ukrainian cities, killed hundreds of civilians and assaulted Europe’s largest atomic power plant.
The invasion has drawn condemnation and severe sanctions from Western nations balancing the punishment of the Kremlin with fears of a hazardous escalation.
