The Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG), Joseph Egbunike who led the Force Criminal Investigations Department to probe embattled Abba Kyari is dead.

He is said to have slumped and died in his office in the late hours of Tuesday.

Egbunike was rushed rushed to the national hospital in Abuja where died.

Police officers have gathered at his official residence in Maitama in preparation for his burial, an official told Gazette.

It is very tragic that he died after battling a protracted ailment that left his neck swollen for many years,” a police source said. “He was previously flown to London for treatment, but he did not recover well before returning to work.”

Egbunike who hails from Onitsha, Anambra State, headed the Special Investigation Panel constituted by the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, to investigate the suspended head of the Police Intelligence Response Team, Abba Kyari, over money laundering allegations.

Reports say that Egbunike and his team worked tirelessly to give the embattled leader of the Intelligence Response Teal, Abba Kyari a soft landing.

He also recommended the demotion of Kyari instead of an outright dismissal.

Until being appointed DIG in late 2020, Egbunike had worked for several years as the head of the police finance department.
