The Lagos State Police Command, on Tuesday, confirmed that hoodlums attacked the Dangote Refinery in Lagos.

The Command added that one of the hoodlums was killed when operatives engaged them in a gun battle while at least 19 others escaped.

A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin said that the attack occurred on Monday.

He added that the hoodlums attempted to steal already-installed armoured cables and had gained entrance into the refinery through the lagoon side.

“Security operatives in the early hours of yesterday Monday, March 28, 2022, foiled an attempted attack on Dangote Refinery, Lekki Free Trade Zone, Lagos,” Hundeyin said in the statement titled, ‘Police Foil Attack On Dangote Refinery.’

“Armed hoodlums numbering about twenty who gained access to the refinery through the lagoon side were repelled while attempting to cart away already-installed armoured cables in the refinery.

“The hoodlums on sighting security operatives fled the scene. One of the hoodlums was hit in the ensuing gunfire and died on the way to the hospital.

“Investigation has commenced with a view to arresting the fleeing attackers.”

Hundeyin confirmed that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Abiodun Alabi has ordered that security be beefed up in and around the refinery.

The Dangote Refinery is an oil refinery owned by the Dangote Group that is under construction in LekkiNigeria.

When complete, it will have the capacity to process about 650,000 barrels per day of crude oil, making it the largest single-train refinery in the world. The investment is over 7 billion US dollars.
