High Court Gives Ruling on Bail Application by Abba Kyari

‘My Life is in Danger in Kuje Prison’ – Abba Kyari Begs Court for Bail

News - Women's Perspective

The embattled Commander of Nigeria Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Abba Kyari has told the court during Thursday’s hearing that his life is in danger at the Kuje prison.

Kyari prayed the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja to release him on bail because he was not safe in prison.

At the resumed hearing, counsel to the embattled police officer, Dr. Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), told the court that his client was attacked by hardened criminals inside the correctional centre.

The lawyer appealed to the court to grant the fresh application to reconsider his client’s request for bail following the reported attack on his life in prison.

Ikpeazu said the bail request should be granted in view of the fact that some of the criminals Kyari arrested while performing his duties are also in prison.

Aside from Kyari, three other police officers that are equally on trial over the alleged offence, Sunday Ubia, Simon Agirigba and John Nuhu also begged the court to okay their release on bail on safety grounds.

However, the 3rd defendant, ASP Bawa James, in the matter, did not request bail.

Opposing the bail request, counsel to the NDLEA, Sunday Joseph, said that the matter was scheduled for review of the facts of the 6th and 7th defendants who pleaded guilty to the counts preferred against them.

Chibunna Umeibe and Emeka Ezenwanne (6th and 7th defendants) were the two alleged drug traffickers arrested at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu.

Umeibe and Ezenwanne had pleaded guilty to five, six and seven counts preferred against them and are being remanded in the Suleja Correctional Centre.
