Fiery Journalist and Social Critic, Rufai Oseni Nabbed for Breaking the Law

"Gist"

Journalist, fiery social critic and Arise TV presenter, Rufai Oseni was on Monday, nabbed for driving on a lane dedicated to only the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT).⁣

In a series of posts on Twitter, Oseni stated his offence and willingness to pay the statutory fine while the Lagos State Government vowed to take necessary action against him.

In his Twitter posts on Monday, 1st August 2022, Oseni alleged that a police officer pointed a gun at him while trying to enforce a traffic infraction.

He stated that he had offered to pay for the traffic infraction but the police officers forcefully collected his keys.

Oseni Rufai stated that: “A Nigerian police officer pointed a gun at me and forcefully took my keys and drove my car off, because he wanted to enforce a traffic infraction. I think the police needs training and retraining.

“I offered to pay for the traffic infraction but the police was hell bent on forcefully collecting my keys and pointing a gun at me.I saw three other cars drive by the BRT lane and they were not stopped.I am at sea!Why point a gun at me and forcefully collect my key.I am shocked.

I am terribly hurt. Enforcement can be done via remita or other http://platforms.It could be tidier. We need to use technology to help the police.

Reacting to the tweet, the Chief Press Secretary to Lagos State Governor, Gboyega Akosile described the broadcast journalist as a lawbreaker saying he would face the necessary penalties.

He wrote: “Thank you Rufai, while the @PoliceNG deal with the police officer in their own way, we’d ensure that necessary action is taken against you for driving on BRT lane as you’ve admitted to the police. You’re a lawbreaker and you should face the necessary penalties.”

However, Rufai refutes the claim of being a lawbreaker stating that other vehicles used the lane and would not have used the lane if he had not seen other drivers.

He said: “I am not a lawbreaker I saw cars pass through the Supposed BRT lane and they were not stopped all of a sudden I was stopped and told I used the bus lane.If I didn’t see other cars I will not go through, plus I want conversant if the road.infact after I was stopped three cars also passed and nothing was done about them.I will never deliberately break the law.I just want to point that out.
