'Some States Unable to Pay N30,000, How Can They Pay N615,000 ?' - Group Tasks NLC

A sociopolitical group, the Confederation of All Progressives Congress Support Groups, has urged the Nigeria Labour Congress to be reasonable in its discussions with the federal government to achieve a national minimum wage.

According to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the APC Support Groups director-general, Kailani Muhammed, gave the advice at a news conference in Abuja on Thursday.

Mr Muhammed said the demand for a minimum wage of N615,000 monthly salary for Nigerian workers by NLC had raised much concern as the country was presently at an economic crossroads.

He added that some state governments are unable to enforce the N30,000 minimum wage due to financial constraints and it would be unreasonable for anyone to demand as much as N615,000.

“First, in an effort to address this request, I would like us to take a critical look at Nigeria’s economic profile,” stated Mr. Muhammad.

To put it bluntly, the nation finds itself at a crossroads in terms of its economic future.

The nation is more deeply entrenched than ever in a profile of foreign debt.

Unfortunately, President Bola Tinubu’s administration is tasked with solving the debt profile enigma. Undaunted, they are working nonstop to get the mess out.

“This is not to mean that the Nigerian workers should solely shoulder the sufferings, but in trying to make the Nigerian workers relatively comfortable, we must be reasonable in the approach.”

He asked the NLC to study matters of national significance, like the minimum wage, in order to reexamine its conversation with the government.
