The former Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, is reported to have been moved out of Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Kyari was moved out of the facility hours after terrorists invaded the prison in the late hours of Tuesday to free some of their members.
Reports say that most of the violent criminals and terrorists in the facility were also released by the terrorists into the FCT.
However, many high-profile inmates were said to have stayed back during the Tuesday night attack, which lasted about 3 hours.
A correctional officer, who wanted to remain anonymous, told Peoples Gazette that inmates like Abba Kyari, Farouk Lawan and other prominent detainees are still in the facility.
Kyari, who was remanded in the prison earlier this year, is standing trial for allegedly dealing in cocaine alongside 4 members of his former police unit and 2 other persons arrested at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu.
Nigerian Correctional Service has confirmed the attack on its facility in a statement issued by the spokesperson to the prisons service Umar Abubakar.
He said that it took the combined efforts of security operatives to restore calm to the area.
Kuje is a local government area in the Federal Capital Territory in Nigeria.
