Six members of staff of the University of Abuja (UniAbuja) and their children who were abducted by unknown gunmen on Tuesday have regained freedom from their captors.
Vanguard reports that they were rescued by security operatives in the early hours of Wednesday.
Details of the operation are still sketchy but early reports say that the abductors abandoned the victims when the military unleashed superior fire power on them.
Sources who spoke with Vanguard gave credit to the bravery of security operatives and the university security staff who chased the abductors to Kwali area where they engaged the in a gun battle.
In a statement released on Tuesday by the University spokesperson, Habib Yakoob, the gunmen abducted a Professor of Economics in the school along with his 2 children.
He said that the bandits gained access to the senior staff quarters at Giri in Gwagwalada Area Council in the FCT in the early hours of Tuesday.
The university spokesman added that the gunmen operated unhindered for over one hour and that security agents were deployed to track down the criminals.
He disclosed that besides the professor and his children, three other persons were also kidnapped.
