"Gist"

The public have reacted to a picture of an empty aircraft after domestic airline operators raised the minimum fare to N50,000.

This is coming after a Nigerian man named Ikenna, via his microblogging platform, Twitter, shared a photo of his morning flight to Abuja with most passengers seats empty.

The photo stirred reactions as many social media users lamented that economy class tickets used to cost N22,000 to N48,000, depending on the airline and destination.

The wonder what the flight tickets would cost during festive seasons when there is a high demand a huge passenger traffic.

Ikenna, posting as @Furwriter· wrote: “Just look at how empty a morning flight is. 50k! 100% increase in air ticket! We are finished in this country.

Reactions have since trailed his post:

Wólҽ Ógundarҽ™@WoleOgundare· Let’s see how this plays out – because something has to give at some point!

lluminated@C_CDon “No way! Not sure it’s because of the price changes though. Prices regularly hovered between 28k and 50k before now for online purchases. Agents charged as high as 70k too. Maybe your route don’t have passengers today.

Chidi Peter. O. ♑@RadioIs “MyFriend Oga why will people pay an agent and not make the payment online yourself? I strongly disagree with your last line, the route should not be the only reason why the plane is empty.

ARINZECHUKWU@arinzejj· “Prices regularly hovered btw 18k – 100k depending on the time you booked but with the recent increase, it will be 50k – 200k and you need to book weeks ahead to get that 50k own depending on the season and route. So, it has everything to do with the increase”

Peter obi stan@Amy62031172· “I can see many people are still unaware that the lowest economy flight fare for domestic flights is now 50k. No wonder this isn’t trending enough. The price hick comes after FG increased aviation fuel price from 190 Naira to 530naira per liter.”

Meanwhile, Ikenna is enjoying the fame brought on by his post. He is considering contesting for the post of President.
