The former Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode is said to be ready to return to Lagos mainstream politics.

The development was announced by the chairman of the Akinwunmi Ambode Campaign Group, Olawale Oluwo on Tuesday during a television interview.

The former governor has been away from major public and political events since losing his second-term bid to the incumbent Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu in 2019.

During his interview appearance on Arise TV, Oluwo who was a former Commissioner in the state said that Ambode is set to reveal his 2023 plans before the current week runs out.

He noted that the former Governor still has some days left to pick up the forms for the ruling All progressives Congress (APC).

However, Oluwo has not yet confirmed which elective position Ambode is coming back to contest for.

According to him, “Governor Ambode will announce his plans within the week. I think the closing for the sale of forms is Friday.”

Oluwo debunked rumours of the ban of the Ambode campaign group by the Lagos APC, Oluwo said nothing of such has happened.

He stated that those making declarations about the ban of the Ambode group are only making reckless statements, pointing out that the constitution of Nigeria guarantees their freedom of association.

He added that even President Muhammadu Buhari cannot just ban an association without court ruling.

“Even the president of Nigeria, can he ban an association? When the constitution of Nigeria says that there is freedom of association. We are all members of the party (APC),” he said.

“To be able to ban an association, there is a process and there must be probable cause that the association is engaging in criminality or treason or bad things that threaten the security of the state. The president himself or the authorities will have to go to court and get an order to proscribe.

“Nobody can use saliva and ban any association because it is guaranteed by the constitution. That statement by the APC PRO that AMGO has been banned is a completely reckless statement.”
