A group of elders from the South-South region of Nigeria have approached the United Nations (UN) to demand for Ibom republic.
In a video obtained online, the group demand a breakaway from the Federal Republic of Nigeria citing marginalisation of indigenes.
Made up mainly of the Ibibio ethnic group, they said they have reached out to the UN to formally register their desire for self-determination and to secede.
A representative of the coalition, Offiong Offiong insisted that though they were unable to make a physical presentation due to Covid19 restrictions, the communique has been submitted and he will follow it up to a logical conclusion.
Standing in from of the UN Secretariat with a copy of the memorandum, Offiong said that, “I am here today to present the communique that was issued after our meeting on June 5, 2021. Unfortunately, because of the lockdown and reopening of the UN Secretariat, where the commission is based, we only ended up leaving our documents with the officers.
“But we are happy today that we were able to come. Unfortunately, Covid19 restrictions have not allowed us to present the documents to all offices.
“We are asking for Ibom Republic. The Ibom Republic will be an attempt for us to demonstrate our emancipation as an indigenous group from the Nigerian State. We want a referendum and we want a decision made. We want our people to go on their own based on the way they have been treated by the Nigerian state.
“It is an exciting day for the Ibom republic. Those documents have been submitted and we will continue to follow up”
