The Akwa Ibom State High Court sitting in Uyo, will today, 4, August 2022 deliver judgement on the murder trial of late Iniubong Umoren.
Umoren, a graduate of Philosophy, University of Uyo is alleged to have been raped, murdered and buried in a shallow grave when she went job-hunting in April 2021. She sought the job while preparing for her NYSC mobilization.
The trial judge, Justice Bassey Nkanang fixed the judgment date after the Prosecution and the Defence Counsel adopted their final written addresses.
The three persons standing trial for the murder of Iniubong are Uduak-Abasi Akpan, Frank Akpan and Anwan-Bassey Akpan who are the first, second and third accused persons.
The first accused, Uduak-Abasi Akpan was said to have lured her by inviting her for a job interview – He is standing trial on a two-count charge of rape and murder.
If found guilty, he might be sentenced to death.
The second accused person Frank Akpan who is the father of the first accused, Uduak-Abasi is charged as an accomplice in the murder while the third accused Anwan-Bassey Akpan, Uduak Akpan sister is charged with accessory because she harboured her brother in her residence in Calabar in a bid to assist him escape justice.
Both the second and third accused may be sentenced to life in prison if found guilty.
