The US has warned Nigeria that Al Qaeda and ISIS are planning to come into Nigeria from the South.
The reports also say that the groups have commenced from the North Western part of the country already.
Commander of the US special operations command, Africa, Dagvin Anderson said in a media briefing that theĀ Islamic extremists are also expanding into other parts of Wes Africa.
The Cable reports that the US will continue to partner with Nigeria in information sharing.
According to him, “we have engaged with Nigeria in intel sharing and in understanding what these violent extremists are doing. That has been absolutely critical to their engagements up in Borno state and into an emerging area of the north western Nigeria that we are seeing al Qaeda starting to make some inroads in.
“So this intelligence sharing is absolutely vital and we stay fully engaged with the government of Nigeria to provide them with the understanding of what these terrorists are doing, what Boko-Haram is doing, what ISIS-West Africa is doing and how ISIS and Al Qaeda are looking to expand further into the littoral areas.”
Speaking about the strategic importance Nigeria holds to the sub-region, Anderson said that, “When it comes to Nigeria in General, Nigeria, obviously, is a critical nation to West Africa. It is a critical nation and we realise that Nigeria is a lynchpin.”
