The Federal Government of Nigeria has sought the intervention of foreign nations for the platforms needed to prosecute the war against terrorism and insurgency.
Lai Muhammed, Minister of Information and Culture made the appeal during a TVC live program “This Morning” on Friday. His plea was in reaction to the news of the gradual arrival of Al Qaeda through the North Western part of Nigeria.
According to him, the Federal Government has never failed in its duties to secure the country as the administration holds security as a cardinal point.
He added that foreign countries’ intervention is needed to prosecute the war against insurgency and terrorism. In his words, “for instance, for more than 2 years, we have been waiting for certain platforms from certain countries which they have refused to supply to us.”
“Even, some countries have refused to give us maintenance on existing platforms. Fighting terrorism is a global issue and should be global joint efforts.”
Lai Mohammed added that: “as much as we are committed to fight terorrism, we also need the support of the developed countries to release to us some platforms that will make our fight more efficient.
“It must be noted that we are not asking them to give us these platforms for free. As a matter of fact, in many cases, some of them have simply refused to sell to us for whatever reasons.”
The information minister regretted that “you cannot on one hand refuse to sell us effective platforms to fight terrorism and at the same time, accuse us of allowing terrorism to run down the continent.”
The Head of the US Special Operations Command, Africa, Maj-Gen Dagvin Anderson, during the week, warned that Al Qaeda and other Islamic extremists were cashing in on Africa’s ineffective handling of the #COVID19 pandemic to advance their goals.
According to him, the groups are gradually creeping into Nigeria and expanding their reach to other West African countries.
