Sales activities in all the 25 Shoprite Outlets in Nigerian have been grounded following an industrial action embarked upon by employees.
The South Africa-owned supermarket chain is Africa’s biggest retail store that threatened to pull out of Nigeria last year.
The process of selling off majority or all of its stakes in Nigeria are almost concluded.
The announcement was made in August 2020 when negotiations with prospective Nigerian acquirers began.
Staff of the supermarket spoken to in Lagos say that the agreement reached between staff and management is that they would work until between 2035 and 2040.
However, with the ongoing pull-out of Nigeria in June, staff demand to be paid off instead of running the risk of being sacked after the take-over by the Nigerian owners.
Unfortunately, Shoprite has shown no interest in their demands.
The multi-national retail store announced its plans to quit Nigeria in its operational and voluntary trading update for the year ended June 28, 2020.
Reports say that Palms, a subsidiary of Tayo Amusan’s Persianas Group bought over the Nigerian Shoprite retail stores.
Palms launched in 1990 and has become a significant group with a track record of proven abilities to initiate, construct and manage world class retail stores.
