Amaka Igwe’s Daughter Remembers her on 58th Post Humous Birthday

Amaka Igwe’s daughter, Ruby has posted an emotional messages to her late mother.

The late movie director and film maker would have turned 58 on the 2nd of January but she passed away suddenly at 51, leaving the movie industry in shock.

Amaka Igwe dominated the creative movie industry for 25 years until she gave in to an asthma attack on April 28, 2014.

Her death occurred in Enugu where she had gone where in company of her husband of 21 years, Charles for a pre-production of a new Igbo sitcom.

Her husband, Charles narrated the events leading to her death to the National Association of Nigerian Theatre Arts Practitioners (NANTAP).

According to him, “we were in Enugu preparing for the new soap, and Amaka was taking some of the people through acting when she had an asthma attack.

“After using inhaler without success, she was taken to a nearby hospital but we were told that the doctor was not around.

“We then went to the teaching hospital in Enugu where we were again told that the Doctors were on strike.

“It was while we were taking her to another hospital that she died.”

Amaka’s daughter, Ruby, on her post humus birthday wrote on her Twitter page that :

· “Spooky fact, this time seven years ago I sat by her as she was answering birthday messages on FB, and she said ‘I can die now, my children will remember me.’ I was so upset with her. ‘That doesn’t mean you get to die!’ I retorted. She was quiet. Four months later she was gone.”

Amaka is reputed for her soap operas, ‘Checkmate‘ and ‘Fuji House of Commotion’. She was also the owner of Top Radio 90.9 Lagos and Amaka Igwe Studios.

The late movie mogul is survived by her husband, three children, an aged mother and siblings.

The Nigerian Government honoured her with the Nigerian National Order of ‘”MFR,” meaning “Member of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.” On her 57th birthday, Google also honoured her with a Google Doodle.
