An angry mob, on Tuesday, descended on a suspected kidnapper after a former captive recognised him and raised an alarm at the Idi-Ori area of Abeokuta North Local Government Area of Ogun State.
Reports say that the suspect was walking around the area on when one of his alleged former victims raised an alarm that he paid ransom to the suspect and his cohorts.
A witness who identified herself as Olubukola told Daily Trust that a mob descended on the suspect and beat him to a pulp.
According to the eyewitness, “They tied his hands and legs. They beat him and gave him a bloody nose. He would have been lynched if not for the arrival of the police.
“At first, the youths did not want to release him to the police. They said they didn’t trust the police. Their fear was that he might be released on bail. They insisted that they’re very sure he was a kidnapper.”
Confirming the incident on Tuesday, Spokesman of the police in the state, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the man remained a suspect as investigation was ongoing.
Oyeyemi however, condemned the attempt to lynch the suspect, saying the law did not permit jungle justice.
