Armed men suspected to be kidnappers have abducted 10 passengers from 2 Benue government-owned commercial buses traveling from Makurdi to Lagos.
The incident was confirmed by Omale Omale, the Benue State Commissioner for Power, Energy, and Transport.
Omale said the incident happened on Sunday afternoon, September 9, 2023, while the two buses branded Benue Links Transport were approaching Okene, Kogi state.
“The kidnappers waylaid the two buses close to Okene, Kogi state, kidnapped four passengers from one bus, and six from another, bringing the total number of passengers abducted to ten on Sunday,” he stated.
The commissioner said it took the intervention of police and a vigilante group to rescue the remaining passengers in the two buses. They certified the drivers’ fitness and asked them to continue their journey to Lagos.
He said the kidnappers have made contact with the families of the victims, and are demanding various sums of money while the Police in Benue are in synergy with their Kogi counterpart to rescue those abducted.
A video that emerged on Monday, September 12 shows a group of young men who escaped from kidnappers.
The men are seeking help but said they had no idea where they were as they escaped from their captors and ran in no particular direction into the bush.
It is hoped that the coordinates of the phone that filmed them would assist in their rescue.
Meanwhile, one of the female victims has been identified as Honey Terdoo.
