The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile Ife has commenced a total and indefinite strike over alleged unpaid allowances.
In a statement released on Tuesday morning, the union stated that the decision became inevitable since all efforts to resolve the issue of payments of the due allowances have not yielded any result.
The institution’s ASUU chairperson, Adeola Ebgedokun disclosed this in a communique issued shortly after an emergency meeting of members of the union on Monday.
Members noted in the statement that it became evident to them that there was no “serious commitment” on the part of the univarsity’s management to pay its members the deserved funds,
It added that the strike, which it described as “comprehensive and total,” would not be called off without a concrete resolution of the institution’s ASUU congress.
The body said that payment of the allowances to its members must be based on the stipulated ASUU computation, adding that it would not accept any other initiative.
It stated in part that, “Congress noted that there was no serious commitment on the part of the university to effect payment of EAA to deserving members.
“Congress also noted that all political and diplomatic means to resolve the imbroglio has failed. Consequently, congress resolved that a total, comprehensive and indefinite strike should commence immediately. The strike must not be called off without a congress resolution to the effect.
“Payment of EAA must be based on ASUU computation. Anything short of this would be unacceptable.”
The institution’s chapter of ASUU added that it has set up a committee to monitor compliance to the strike and ensure it is effective.
