In the face of the prolonged industrial strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Federal Government through the National Universities Commission (NUC) has advised qualified Nigerian students to apply for scholarships to schools overseas.
Nigerian Universities, particularly the Federal institutions have been on lockdown due to unsettled disputes between the government and lecturers.
The issues bordered mainly on the lecturers’ remunerations and conditions of service.
In what would appear like an effort to reduce the frustration of parents and students, a letter signed by the Deputy Executive Secretary, Administration of the NUC, Chris Maiyaki, and addressed to all vice-chancellors, called qualified students to embrace an initiative of the government of the United Kingdom to study abroad.
The letter explained that the British High Commission announced the call for applications for the scholarships to study in the UK, which opened on 2nd August 2022 and closes on 1 November 2022.
The scholarships according to the letter, are fully funded to individuals from any background who demonstrate the requisite skills and commitment necessary to bring about positive change.
Maiyaki urged the Vice-Chancellors to as a matter of urgency ensure the wide circulation of the scholarships application in their various universities.
Interested individuals are expected to submit their applications via the official website only. Specific mention was made of via www.chevening.org/apply.
The Chevening Scholarships, awarded by the government of the United Kingdom, are fully funded scholarships to individuals who demonstrate the requisite skills and commitment to positive change.
The statement read: “The National Universities Commission is in receipt of the letter from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ref. TSW/BRI/V/T and dated 12 August 2022, with the attached Call Letter from the British High Commission Abuja, dated 3rd August 2022, on the above subject
“Consequently, I write to forward the Call Letter to Vice-Chancellors for urgent attention and wide circulation in your various universities”.
