Betty Irabor Shares Experience of How She Was Duped at a Supermarket

News - Women's Perspective

Media personality, Betty Irabor has shared her experience after she was duped at a supermarket in Lagos.

According to her, she picked only a few items and when she got to the checkout counter, she was told all the items she bought amounted to N49,640

She explained that she was taken aback but didn’t contest it. However, while going home, she looked at the items on the receipt and realised she was charged N49,640 for a salmon fillet which a staff of the store already told her costs 8,000.

She said she went back and the cashier tried to convince her the salmon costs N49,640.

Eventually, they admitted that it cost N8,000 and blamed a system error for the hike in price.

Ms. Irabor urged shoppers to pay extra attention when shopping to avoid being scammed or overcharged.

Betty Irabor wrote: I went grocery shopping the other day and this happened.

I was billed the sum of N65,455.90, which I thought was rather high considering I only picked a few items, which when mentally calculated, shouldn’t have exceeded N40,000.

I was a bit mad at myself because this shopping was not exactly on a need basis. I couldn’t justify that kind of expense, especially after the bulk shopping just before the new year.

As we drove out of the supermarket, I decided to just see exactly what item took the bulk of my money. It was then that I saw that I was billed N49,740 for a salmon filet, which cost about N8,000.

What in the name of a rip-off is this in Governor Sanwo Olu’s Greater Lagos?

I went ballistic as I ordered my driver to drive back to the supermarket.

What kind of daylight robbery is this? I yelled as I shoved my receipt in the face of one of the supervisors.

How is this 49k when a cashier earlier told me it was N8k when I did a price check?

Here’s your salmon; refund my money NOW.

Am I mad? Why will I buy a slice of salmon for 49k!

I can’t remember any time in my entire lifetime that I allowed anger to consume me like that. And the supervisor was still trying to convince me that it cost 49k !!!

After a long back and forth, which saw me throw empty threats of disrupting normal store activity, came an apology.

“We are sorry it was a system’s error and you were right, the salmon cost 8k.”😳😳

This is so unbelievable. So that’s how I would have lost N41,000 in January of a new year.

Here’s my account details just credit my account with my money. I am done.

And that’s how a perfectly planned afternoon was ruined but hey, imagine if I hadn’t checked my receipts🤔🤔

You see, this new year, I nor dey gree for anybody.

Please be very vigilant when out shopping.
