Reports say that Bishop Matthew Kukah has fled Sokoto as thugs burnt down the diocese of the Catholic Church where he presides.

Rampaging protesters forced Bishop Kukah, an outspoken government critic, to flee his base to an unknown location.

According to Peoples Gazette, St Bahkita, which serves as the secretariat of the diocese, was set ablaze by the thugs. The information is corroborated by pictures and videos shared online.

An analysis of the geo-location confirmed that the video was indeed that of the church along Aliyu Jodi Road. It was also the same building claimed to have been burnt by rampaging thugs.

When contacted by The Gazette, Bishop Kukah said he was on his way out of Sokoto. The windy background on the bishop’s end of the call confirmed he was indeed on the move.

Witnesses say that the police fired teargas to disperse protesters from breaking into the church earlier in the day, but the attackers regrouped after the police vans left the neighbourhood.

Naija News had reported earlier that Deborah Samuel, a 200-level student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education was lynched and burnt to death by her school mates for allegedly insulting Islam’s Prophet Mohammed.

Bishop Kukah condemned the act in a statement released on May 12:
