Ghana’s President, Nana Akufo-Addo today, March 1st, became the first person in the world to receive the coronavirus vaccine from Covax.
Covax is a global scheme to procure and distribute vaccinations for free to poor countries.
Richer countries are moving at lightening speed to vaccinate their citizens while many poor countries are still awaiting their vaccine consignments.
Before taking his jab, Nana Akufo-Addo said that, “It is important that I set the example that this vaccine is safe by being the first to have it so that everybody in Ghana can feel comfortable about taking this vaccine.”

The 76-year-old president of Ghana took his shot of Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine on Monday in a live broadcast.
The First Lady of Ghana Rebecca Akufo-Addo also took her shot one day before the remaining 600,000 doses are distributed across the country.
The country has set a target to vaccinate 20 percent of its 30 million population by the end of 2021.
In February, it has gave approval through the food and drug agency to obtain the Indian made vaccine as well as Russia’s Sputnik V.
Ghana was the first country to receive vaccines from Covax led by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations CEPI).
In total, 145 countries are listed to receive 337.2 million doses by June 2021. The consignment is projected to cover a little over 3 percent of their populations put together.
Covax has said it hopes to raise the figure to up to 27 per cent in lower-income countries by the end of December.
