The Chadian President, Idriss Deby is reported to have been killed this afternoon, Tuesday, 20th April.
The announcement was made on national radio in a statement by the national army of Chad.
The statement revealed that the newly elected President Deby died of wounds he received while commanding his army in a battle against rebel forces in the North.
Idriss Deby recently won his sixth term in office in polls that saw him win by 79.3% of votes in the latest provisional election results announced on Monday.
According to the army spokesman, General Bemrandoua Agouna, the military had been pushed back by a column of insurgents who were advancing on the capital, N’Djamena.
Campaign Director, Mahamat Zen Bada, the President was was billed to give his victory speech after the provisional results were announced but opted instead to pay a visit to Chadian soldiers in the front lines.
A report from the war front said that the soldiers were attacked by militants from the Front pour L’Alternance et la Concorde au Tchad (FACT), (Front for Change and Concord in Chad).
The militants emerged from their base in Libya and entered Chad on the 11th of April. Reports also say that their stated goal was to rid the country of Deby’s 31 years of power.
