United States President Donald Trump is now under arrest and taken into police custody ahead of his upcoming arraignment.
The 45th US president faced charges over hush money payments made to an adult actress just before the 2016 presidential election.
Trump becomes the first president in American history to face criminal charges.
The former US president is not wearing handcuffs but will have his fingerprints taken. It is unclear whether his mugshot will be taken.
Ahead of his arraignment, the former president had expressed shock at the situation via Truth Social, his media platform.
“Heading to Lower Manhattan, the courthouse. Seems so SURREAL — WOW, they are going to ARREST ME. Can’t believe this is happening in America. MAGA!” he said.
A judge ruled on Monday to bar news outlets from broadcasting the arraignment. However, details of the charges are expected to be revealed in the coming hours.
Trump is expected to face more than 30-count charges related to business fraud as part of a probe into the $130,000 payout to Stormy Daniels, the adult actress, in an attempt to buy her silence over an alleged affair.
According to CNN, Trump’s legal team said the former president will plead not guilty and challenge the charges.
He is currently the subject of multiple investigations into his conduct before, during, and after his first term as president.
Amid the allegations, there have been concerns as to Trump’s eligibility to re-run for president following his bid.
However, the US constitution does not forbid arrested or convicted persons to run or be elected into office.
