Nigeria’s First Lady, Mrs Aisha Buhari deactivated her Twitter account on Friday night.
She took the action on Friday night, 1 minute before midnight after the Ministry of Information and Culture ordered the National Broadcasting Commission to begin the process of removing Twitter from Nigeria’s cyberspace.
Reports say the First Lady’s action was taken in solidarity with her husband. The microblogging website had deleted a tweet that ripped up bitter sentiments across many parts of the country.
The apparent hate tweet saw the President threatening to deal with youths causing trouble the way soldiers dealt with South Easterners during the civil war.
Mrs Aisha Buhari’s lat tweet:
Nigerian millennial have however, found a way to continue to use Twitter by activating VPN from Google Play Store.
Typical public reaction:
Ayemojubar@ayemojubar·Buhari govt has suspended the operations of our #4thArmOfGovt, Twitter in Nigeria. The only arm that’s always there for the citizens 24/7. The last hope to get justice. #TwitterSuspendBuharisAccount
Elikor Benson @ElikorBenson·The governments of China, Iran, North Korea, and Turkmenistan blocked access to Twitter in those countries. I still have Chinese and Iran followers. So Twitter can still be accessed using sweet VPNs. #TwitterSuspendBuharisAccount is a NO for me. He should see our tweets.
