The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to lift the Ban slammed on Twitter in the next couple of days.
The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Muhammed disclosed this while speaking with newsmen on Wednesday, 11th August after the weekly Federal Executive Council Meeting in Abuja.
The Minister stated that government’s negotiation with the microblogging platform is at an advanced stage. He added that most of the conditions have been accepted.
Muhammed added that areas still pending include the setting up of an office and having Nigerians as management cadre staff to manage the Nigerian business.
He said that the owners of Twitter have acceded to setting up an office in Nigeria but the earliest it would do it is 2022.
The Nigerian Government had, on the 4th of June, ordered the indefinite suspension of Twitter in the country.
The directive followed the deletion of a tweet that made reference to the Nigerian civil, an action the the bird app said violated its rules.
Many Nigerians, civil society groups and the international community condemned the action of the Federal Government. However, the official ban did not prevent Nigerians from continuing to use the app.
They circumvented the ban through the use of Virtual Protocol Networks (VPN).
The Minister is, however, optimistic that the ban will be lifted in a couple days or weeks when all issues would have been resolved.
