Nigeria, today commenced the covid19 vaccinations. Dr Cyprian Ngong of the National Hospital, Abuja was the very first Nigerian within the country to receive the AstraZeneca/Oxford Covax jab.
Chairman of the Presidential Taskforce on Covid19 and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha flagged off the exercise on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari.
During the inauguration, on Friday, Executive Director, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr Faisal Shuaib said it was a “watershed” moment.
Minister of health, Dr Osagie Ehanire aded that it was crucial “to first cater for those who cater for us.”
After taking his own inoculation, Dr Ngong said he wished his father had taken the vaccine before he died of the fatal disease.
Dr Cyprian Ngong has been treating covid19 patients at the National Isolation Centre in Abuja since the pandemic broke out last year.
According to him, “We’ve been at the forefront here in the National Hospital.
“They’ve provided everything we need for this fight. We’ve lost some, we’ve got some and we are happy we are getting the vaccines now in Nigeria.
“That is about the best news we’ve heard since. I only wished my dad had had this vaccine maybe months ago or so. We lost him but we thank God that the fight is still on and we will win.“
Over 3.9 million doses of the AstraZeneca?Oxford covid19 vaccine shipped into the country arrived Abuja on Tuesday, 2nd of March, 2021.
Reports say that President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo will also receive the vaccination on Saturday to douse rumours of the effect of the medication.
